Pharmacogenetic Testing in the Twin Cities
Pharmacogenetic testing, sometimes called PGT or medication genetic testing, may provide helpful insight into how your body processes certain medications. At Truyu Health & Wellbeing, PGT can be used as one tool within psychiatric medication management to support more informed, individualized treatment decisions.
What Is Pharmacogenetic Testing?
Pharmacogenetic testing looks at specific genes that may affect how your body metabolizes or responds to certain medications. In mental health care, this information can help your provider better understand how you may process certain psychiatric medications and whether some medications may require additional caution, closer monitoring, or adjusted dosing.
PGT does not tell us the “perfect” medication, guarantee that a medication will work, or replace a thoughtful clinical evaluation. Instead, it adds another layer of information to help guide care in a more personalized way. We believe psychiatric medication management is both a science and an art. Every person’s body, brain chemistry, life experience, and treatment needs are different. A medication that works well for one person may not be the best fit for another. That is why our approach emphasizes individualized care, careful prescribing, regular follow-up, and ongoing communication.
Medication management is most effective when it considers the full picture of who you are — your symptoms, health history, past medication experiences, current medications, lifestyle, goals, and preferences. Pharmacogenetic testing may help provide additional clarity when medication decisions feel uncertain.
How PGT Can Support Medication Management
PGT may offer insight into:
How quickly or slowly your body may process certain medications
Whether standard dosing may be appropriate for some medications
Possible medication sensitivities
Potential drug-gene interactions
Why a past medication may have caused side effects or limited benefit
Which medication options may require closer monitoring
PGT may be a good fit if you
Felt unsure about starting psychiatric medication
A history of medication sensitivity
Concerns about medication metabolism or dosing
Tried medications with limited benefit
Experienced difficult or unexpected side effects
Needed multiple medication changes
Multiple medications that may interact with one another
Ongoing symptoms despite treatment
What to Expect
Pharmacogenetic testing is typically simple and noninvasive. If testing is recommended, your provider will explain the process, answer your questions, and discuss how the results may be used in your treatment plan.
Testing often involves a cheek swab or saliva sample. Once results are available, your provider will review them with you in the context of your mental health history, current medications, past medication experiences, and treatment goals.
During your results review, your provider may discuss how your body may metabolize certain medications, whether your current medication plan raises any concerns, and whether adjustments or additional monitoring may be appropriate.
